That would be too hammy and, let’s face it, too uncool for an artist with Morton’s reptilian body temperature. It’s not that his hommages to the built environment are deserted, like so many land-locked Marie Celestes - indeed, Morton often wraps his sculptures in soundscapes suggestive of real life, or at least filmic action - but it is very much the case that he invites ghostly presences to inhabit his structures. Thinking back to his hyper-realist scale models of apartment building balconies, Modernist masterpiece architecture and urban flyovers, he seems to have invested his installations with the sort of creepy pathos associated with the mansion behind the Bates Motel or the two-story A-frame residence in The Amityville Horror.
